Maserati ready for debut

Former grand prix stars Johnny Herbert and Mika Salo have pronounced themselves happy with the development of the new Maserati MC12 ahead of its debut in the FIA GT Championship at Imola this weekend

The controversial V12 supercar will not be eligible for points and is being forced to run with a narrower rear wing than originally envisaged. Two of the cars will be on the grid at Imola, one for Herbert and Fabrizio De Simone and another for Salo and Andrea Bertolini.

"I am more than satisfied," said Herbert. "Because we signed the agreement a few days ago and the first test at Mugello went extremely well. The MC12 is a pleasant car to drive. Comfort is very important in races of this type. A car has to be set up in two specific ways for two different drivers and I think that the perfect combination has been found."

Salo added: "It's quite exciting. It has been a very busy testing [schedule] and I think we should be ready for the race. It's a very well balanced car, very comfortable especially for the long runs."
