Deletraz to race Hexis Aston in GT1
Jean-Denis Deletraz is to return to top level GT racing this year having signed for the Hexis Aston Martin team in the new GT1 World Championship
Sometime Formula 1 driver Deletraz was a regular race winner in the FIA GT Championship until spending last season developing Phoenix Racing's Audi in GT3.
The 46-year-old Swiss will be paired with 29-year-old French GT regular Fred Makowiecki, who took pole on his last GT1 appearance - a one-off outing in the 2008 FIA season finale in Argentina in Larbre's Saleen.
Deletraz said he was impressed with the World GT1 field, which features 24 cars from six manufacturers, even though he had misgivings about the format, with two one-hour races at each event rather than a single long-distance race.
"Although I am not a fan of the new format, as GT for me is synonymous with endurance and strategy, I must admit that in the current economic climate these new rules and new World Championship status have allowed a very high level field to be gathered together," said Deletraz.
He expects to form a competitive partnership with Makowiecki.
"I will have the good fortune to share my car with Fred Makowiecki, a long-standing Hexis driver, but also one of the fastest GT drivers in the world," Deletraz said. "His speed and my experience should make an excellent cocktail - our rivals should be warned."
