Brabham to race Sumo Power Nissan

Le Mans winner and multiple sportscar champion David Brabham will join the GT1 World Championship with Sumo Power Nissan this year

The 45-year-old Australian will share the team's #21 with Jaime Campbell-Walter, who has been confirmed for a second year with the squad. Sumo Power had already announced that it had signed Ricardo Zonta and Enrique Bernoldi for its #20 car.

"When I was at the FIA awards ceremony in December, I saw the GT1 trophy being presented and I thought how cool it would be to win it," said Brabham, who has twice won the GT1 class at Le Mans as well as taking outright victory with Peugeot in 2009.

"Therefore, I was delighted when the opportunity came up to join Sumo Power GT. I'm now really excited to be part of the team and the FIA GT1 World Championship.

"The series has all the right ingredients and I like the format of the races. A reflection of its credibility is the number of top-level drivers that are taking part, which means there's a lot out there that could win the title - and of course, that includes the drivers in the two Nissan teams."

Brabham, Zonta and Bernoldi all had their first test in the Nissan at Zolder yesterday. Double American Le Mans Series LMP1 champion Brabham will start his 2011 racing season by driving the Highcroft HPD in the Sebring 12 Hours next weekend.

Sumo Power's new sister squad JR Motorsports will run the other two Nissans in the championship, with ex-Sumo Power drivers Peter Dumbreck and Michael Krumm moving across to the new operation, joined by Lucas Luhr and Richard Westbrook.
