Bowe back in Veskanda
Sportscar veteran John Bowe is making a return to the cockpit to promote Adelaide's Race of a Thousand Years
The V8 Supercar star will drive a Veskanda sportscar at a historic meeting at Phillip Island next month bearing sponsorship of the American Le Mans Series event which will be staged on December 29-31 this year.
"The Veskanda would have to be my favourite all-time racecar - I can't wait to drive it again," said Bower.
"It really was state-of-the-art for its time and we never lost a race in it.
"It wouldn't be competitive compared to today's sportscars in the Le Mans Series, but it still holds lots of track records throughout Australia - even though we haven't raced it for over ten years."
Bowe dominated Australian sportscar racing in the mid-80s, winning the 1986 Australian Championship.
The brainchild of Bernie Van Elsen, the car was built locally by K & A Engineering in Adelaide.
A keen fan of sportscar racing, Bowe believes the Adelaide Le Mans Series event will be a valuable addition to the Australian motorsport calendar.
"These days, the sportscars are basically open wheelers with a body. Racing for six hours into the night on New Year's Eve, it should be quite a spectacle and you couldn't have a better place to hold a party than Adelaide," he added.
"The city is crazy about motorsport.
"It may not have the Grand Prix any more, but the public showed at the V8 Supercar race last year how much they are behind the sport.
"Having David Brabham in the series is a bit a of bonus because he already has a profile here. He would certainly show us a thing or two in modern Le Mans sportscars. These things are real weapons - 800 horsepower, 900 kilos, carbon chassis, F1 carbon brakes - I would love to have a drive."
