Bailey beaten, but Lister still on pole

A Lister Storm will start from pole position for Sunday's fifth round of the FIA GT Championship, at the Hungaroring. But unusually, it was Philippe Favre who took top spot, beating the Championship-leading car, driven by Julian Bailey and Jamie Cambell-Walter into second place

This will be Swiss driver Favre's first international pole position since his 1989 F3000 pole at Silverstone. "That was my last competitive car," he explained. "I did the Daytona 24 Hours with Nicolaus Springer and Peter Hardman this year, and after Hardman left the team, they called me. I did not expect to be in the FIA GT Championship, and it was a very big and pleasant surprise."

Former F1 driver Bailey was fastest in the afternoon, but the with temperatures soaring, the session was generally slower. "If the weather stays the same tomorrow, it will be OK," Bailey said. "This is going to be the hardest race of the year, especially with 100 kg penalty weight."

The second row of the grid will be occupied by the Paul Belmondo Racing Chrysler Vipers, with Derichebourg and Vosse qualifying ahead of Gosselin and Belmondo. The Carsport Holland line-up of Hezemans and Hart was fifth fastest, after hitting traffic problems on his fastest laps. "There is no way I could have got down to challenge for pole - we simply have too much weight," said Hezemans.

The N-GT pole went to Le Mans pole-sitter Christophe Bouchut, in the Larbre Competition Porsche 996 GT3-R. His time of 1:42.274 was set in the morning, with the team concentrating on race set-up in the afternoon. Luca Riccitelli was second fastest in the RWS Red-Bull Porsche, with the EMKA GTC Porsche driven by Tim Sudgen in third.

The KRT Lamborghini Diablo, has once more been forced to withdraw after a crash in free practice put them out of the Silverstone race. This time a gearbox failure in the first session ended their weekend early.
