GP3 Silverstone: Hubert wins disrupted race to reclaim points lead

A truncated race featured three virtual safety cars and one full safety car, with the key moment for Hubert coming when the full safety car re-entered the pits on lap six.

Hubert set two fastest laps on the following tours to streak outside of DRS range once it was reactivated, which was key to him escaping the chasing Russian Nikita Mazepin.

Hubert, who was keen to win "on the road" after inheriting his only previous victory at Paul Ricard when Dorian Boccolacci had been disqualified, becomes the second repeat winner of the season along with team-mate Callum Ilott - who he now heads by six points in the drivers' standings.

Ilott took another podium to remain second in the points ahead of Mazepin - who finished second - and took two important points for fastest lap.

Ilott survived early pressure from Ryan Tveter but eventually drove away, finishing alone on the track.

Tveter held on for fourth, having benefitted at the start of the race when his team-mate Giuliano Alesi had a slow getaway from third.

The result was his best of the year, a welcome tonic having crashed out of the lead at Turn 1 in Austria last weekend.

Boccolacci took fifth despite heavy pressure from Leonardo Pulcini, who started ninth.

Pulcini is currently under investigation for some robust defending from Pedro Piquet. The two finished sixth and seventh on track, but Piquet hit Pulcini in the rear as the Italian defended entering Stowe on the penultimate lap.

An intense battle for eighth was decided in favour of Alesi. Arden driver Joey Mawson had held the position until the penultimate lap, but just could not hold the spot as Alesi saved one DRS usage, passing Mawson at Stowe.

Alesi therefore scored the all important reversed-grid pole for Sunday's race, having taken his first series win in the same race last year.

Mawson still finished ninth, having started 13th, with Alessio Lorandi taking 10th.

Driving with a broken collarbone, he stalled from sixth on the grid but fought back to take points, defeating Niko Kari.

The Finn started 19th on the grid, and on the last lap hit the Stowe exit curb, which launched his car into a wheelie for around five seconds in a scary incident. He landed the car and finished the race.

Gabriel Aubry clipped Tatiana Calderon into a spin on lap three and Julien Falchero and Juan Manuel Correa crashed into each other at Turn 1, with all four retiring.

The series' most recent race winner, Jake Hughes, retired with a mechanical issue on lap 13 after fighting for eighth place.
