Monza GP3: Jimmy Eriksson takes pole as Alex Lynn’s bid is thwarted

Former title contender Jimmy Eriksson scored his second pole position of the GP3 Series season at Monza on Saturday morning

Koiranen GP racer Eriksson, who has only scored seven points in the last seven races and tumbled to fifth in the standings, scooped the four on offer for pole to restart his feint title hopes. He lapped the Italian Grand Prix venue in 1m38.195s.

Points leader Alex Lynn had looked poised to grab the top spot in the dying seconds for Carlin, and was 0.27 seconds faster than Eriksson's time at the second split, but Alex Fontana's crash at the Parabolica forced him to abort the lap.

Lynn will start sixth, after leading the times for much of the session, one place behind closest title rival Richie Stanaway of Status GP. The latter was caught on camera doing some suspicious weaving with another car in close proximity, which the stewards might be interested in.

ART's Dino Zamparelli continued his impressive recent form with second on the grid, a third of a second off Eriksson's pole time, with fellow Brits Nick Yelloly, who was on pole with three minutes left, and Carlin's Emil Bernstorff next up.

Robert Visoiu will start seventh, ahead of Marvin Kirchhofer (who baulked Lynn on his second run), Patrick Kujala and Dean Stoneman.
