GP3 Monza: Red Bull junior Daniil Kvyat takes pole by huge margin

Red Bull protege Daniil Kvyat scored his first GP3 pole position at Monza on Saturday morning by over half a second to keep his title hopes burning

His session started with a problem, as he needed a bump start that involved most of his MW Arden crew falling over as they did so. However, once on track, Kvyat dominated the session.

The Russian's first effort, a 1m37.368s, put him on top in the first half of the 30-minute session, and then he worked down to a 1m36.933s on his second set of fresh tyres - the only driver in the 27-car field to dip under the 1m37s bracket.

Team-mate Robert Visoiu took the fight to him, but the two-time race winner was over half a second down on the pole time.

Recently-deposed points leader Tio Ellinas began his fightback, setting the third-fastest time in his Manor machine.

Carlin duo Alexander Sims and Nick Yelloly will start fourth and fifth, although both spun near the end of the session. Yelloly rotated when he dropped his left-rear wheel onto the gravel at Roggia, while Sims outbraked himself at Parabolica.

After that, David Fumanelli's car broke down at Rettifilo, so the last laps of the session meant no improvements.

Carlos Sainz Jr will start sixth, having all-but-matched Kvyat's pace on Friday, ahead of ART's title contenders Conor Daly and Facu Regalia - who was fastest overall in the final sector - with Kevin Korjus and Lewis Williamson rounding out the top 10.
