WilliamsF1 gains BMW technical resources
German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung reports that BMW Motorsport and WilliamsF1 each holds an opt-out clause in the new contract extending their partnership until 2009, which was announced at the European GP. The extension deal, agreed 18 months ahead of the expiry of the existing partnership agreement, includes the construction of a second wind tunnel, due to be operational in early 2004
BMW Group board member Dr Burkhard Göschel said: "We are very pleased to have placed collaboration with WilliamsF1 on a sound and long-term basis. This new contract envisages enhanced integration between the two partners. As an automobile manufacturer, we have options that are simply not open to a racing team and we need to join together in exploiting these possibilities."
WilliamsF1 team principal Frank Williams commented: "BMW have been an extremely impressive and highly motivated engine partner since 2000. I have every confidence that, with the structure of this new agreement, we will be able to draw from a deeper pool of BMW resource. When added together with the technical competence and determination to win at WilliamsF1, I believe that this relationship will yield significant dividends."
