Wheldon aims for Atlantic success
Dan Wheldon hopes to follow in the footsteps of Jacques Villeneuve and Michael Andretti - starting with this weekend's Toyota Atlantic Championship opener at Homestead-Miami
Villeneuve and Andretti are just two of the famous names to have graduated from the series.
Wheldon will drive for the Californian-based team PPI Motorsports to race a Jayhard Swift Toyota in this year's 12-round series.
PPIM's Atlantic program manager Nick Harvey said: "Having watched his career with great interest, I am confident that Dan will make the transition into the Atlantic series without a hitch. We're looking forward to a highly competitive season."
Wheldon won last year's US Formula Ford 2000 series by storm - taking six wins and eleven podium positions - and will be hoping for similar glory this season.
"This is an excellent opportunity to move into what is know as one of the toughest championships in the US.
"Everyone on the PPI Motorsports team is very professional, and they have the hunger to do very, very well.
"I certainly view the CART Toyota Atlantic Championship as being an ideal stepping-stone to reaching a drive in Champ Cars."
