Watts happy with victory tally

AUTOSPORT 1000km LMP2 winner Danny Watts says he is happy to have won three out of the five Le Mans Series Races in the class in 2010, even if he and his Strakka team-mates Nick Leventis and Jonny Kane were beaten to the title by RML's Tommy Erdos and Mike Newton

Watts drove the final stint in Sunday's race at Silverstone to complete an impressive fightback after the HPD team lost Kane's early lead when a backmarker took out Leventis mid-stint.

"As soon as I got in it I thought this is going to be Ricard all over again," said Watts. "I kept quiet on the radio and normally I talk a bit. I just got my head down and tried to get my head down - and even at the end I could still do some good lap times.

"We were on the back foot at Ricard, so it was exactly the same situation. We've done it before and we knew we had the car under us and we were quick enough to do it all weekend."

Asked if he was disappointed not to have come away with the title, Watts replied: "I would rather be fast everywhere and P1 everywhere in terms of winning races and go out with a bang. That's what people notice, rather than if you crawl around and get fifths and thirds and take the title.

"You get noticed more if you are top of the times. Winning outright was one of the highlights in that regard."

RML, which won its class in the Algarve round earlier in the year, clinched its second LMP2 title in the series finale after finishing fifth.

"We are obviously delighted to win the championship," said Newton. "To win it we knew we had to get it home, and we had a clean race considering how much contact there was out there today."
