Volkswagen to defend Dakar title
Volkswagen have confirmed that they will return to the Dakar Rally in 2010 after their historic victory in this year's event
Giniel de Villiers led a VW one-two in the inaugural South American Dakar, as the team became the first to win the famous rally with a diesel-powered car.
VW's announcement comes one month after main rivals Mitsubishi declared that they were pulling out of cross country rallying due to the economic downturn.
But VW Group executive board chairman Professor Dr Martin Winterkorn said Dakar remained good value for his company.
"No doubt, the 2009 Dakar Rally contributed to the fact that the Volkswagen brand is now shining even brighter around the world," he said.
"Therefore, our participation in this event is a good investment in the future of our company and that's why we decided to again compete in the Dakar Rally in 2010."
Team boss Kris Nissen is confident that VW will be equally hard to beat in 2010.
"We've got quick drivers, a reliable car and an experienced team - in other words, everything we need to again contest the Dakar' and to fight for victory," he said.
