Vasiliauskas, de Marco top practices

Kazim Vasiliauskas and Nicola de Marco topped a free practice session each on the first day of this weekend's Formula 2 round at Monza

Vasiliauskas finished nearly four tenths of a second clear in the first half-hour session, posting his quickest lap in the final five minutes and then spinning out at Turn 1 shortly afterwards. But his time was enough to keep him ahead of Mihai Marinescu, who had been fastest for most of the session, and Sergei Afanasiev just a further 0.006s back.

Championship leader Philipp Eng finished the session fourth, ahead of Johan Jokinen and Jolyon Palmer.

The only major incident of the session was Ajith Kumar spinning at the exit of Ascari and hitting the barrier on the inside of the track. Plamen Kralev also had a spin at the end.

De Marco went quickest in the afternoon session with a late effort displacing Palmer from the top spot. Palmer remained second, just ahead of Benjamin Bailly and Armaan Ebrahim - 0.070s covering the trio.

Eng and Jokinen were fifth and sixth ahead of Afanasiev, who brought the session to an early end with an accident at Ascari. The Russian ran wide in the middle of the corner and landed in the barrier on the outside at the exit. His car came to rest blocking the track, so time was called with less than a minute remaining on the clock.

Vasiliauskas was just eighth after topping the morning session, while Marrakech winner Dean Stoneman could only manage 13th and ninth in the two practices.

There were no other incidents of note in the second session, but Jack Clarke was shown the black and white flag for repeatedly cutting the first chicane.
