Urgent licence upgrades for Bathurst 24 Hours
The Confederation of Australian Motor Sport has stepped in to assist PROCAR Australia, the organiser of the inaugural Bathurst 24 Hours in November, which is facing a shortage of Australian drivers holding International licences. CAMS will convene an ad hoc panel of instructors and former racing drivers at next month's Sandown 500 in Melbourne, to observe competitors who need to have CAMS National C4 licences upgraded
The Sandown 500 on September 8 will be contested by cars complying with the Nations Cup (Group 1 and Group 2) and GT Performance regulations. All will be eligible for the new Bathurst event, which is based on the concept of the ADAC 24 Hours at the Nurburgring in Germany, and was granted International status to attract overseas entries.
The CAMS Special Observation Panel will short-circuit the usual process for International upgrades, which requires drivers to be observed at five meetings on at least two different circuits. With only 15 weeks to go until the Bathurst event, many Australian drivers have no opportunity to compete at five race meetings.
