Tracy must fight for points lead

CART points leader Paul Tracy has had his lead trimmed to 11 points after the Bosch Spark Plugs Grand Prix, but mainly has the low scores of his rivals to thank for his retaining the lead in recent races. The Canadian finished tenth at Nazareth, and sixth at Motegi, the previous race

However, Milwaukee where the forthcoming 6th round of the championship is to be held, was the scene of Tracy's first win of last year. It also marked the beginning of a sea change in fortunes for the KOOL Green driver.

"Last year's victory at Milwaukee was one of the more memorable wins of my career," he acknowledged.

"It was my first win for Team KOOL Green, the first win with Tony Cicale as my engineer and it was the beginning of a streak of consistent finishes that have us leading the championship today. "

Consistent is certainly the word, as Tracy has racked up 12 top-five finishes in the last 19 races

"We've had a good start to the season but we can't afford to get complacent," added Tracy.

"We've got a lot of races coming up and we need to score points to stay ahead of the other guys," Tracy admitted.

"Another victory in Milwaukee would be sweet. I've always enjoyed racing at The Mile. It's one of the better tracks for passing and racing. With its wide and flat corners you can make a move on either the inside or outside, which makes for some pretty wide-open racing."

The KOOL Green driver put himself into the lead with a win at Long Beach and third at Rio, but has benefited from the unreliability and poor luck of Juan Montoya. With the win of the prestigious Indy 500 behind him, the Colombian will doubtless be even more fired up to take that first 2000 CART win. The speed of Montoya thus far in the season means that Tracy is soon likely to have a serious challenge to his points lead.
