Three-way Historic Formula Ford 1600 title goes down to the wire

One the hardest-fought championships ever held in historic racing will be decided on Sunday as the Historic Formula Ford 1600 Championship concludes at Silverstone

The championship for cars from the first five years of the globally successful category has enjoyed an epic season to mark the 50th anniversary of Formula Ford.

Michael O'Brien, Callum Grant and Richard Tarling will fight for the title over a pair of races on the Silverstone national circuit this weekend.

Although Formula Ford was famous in period for the number of accidents, the racing in the Historic championship has been wheel-to-wheel yet impeccably clean and free of incident.

O'Brien (Merlyn Mk20), Grant (Merlyn Mk20) and Tarling (Jamun T2) are the contenders and ex-Formula Palmer Audi champion Tarling heads to Silverstone on the back of five wins in the last six races.

Each driver must drop two scores in their final season tally.

Tarling only has a score of eight to drop, putting him on 202 heading to Silverstone, while O'Brien has scored in every race to date and has two 14s to drop, giving him 197 points and Grant is on 193 after also dropping an eight.

There are many permutations, but a double win for any of them would be enough to seal the title.

Tarling has worked hard to get his Jamun developed into a race-winning package against the Merlyns and has come on strongly over the second half of the season.

"Early in the year I thought it was gone, but I finally grabbed the lead at Snetterton last month," said Tarling, the oldest of the three contenders.

"It's all to play for at Silverstone but whatever happens we've all had a good year in a good championship with a great atmosphere.

"It could be any one of the three of us to win the title."
