'THOR' deployed for IndyCar safety R&D
The Indy Racing League is working on a joint programme with the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and US company Delphi Electronics & Safety in an effort to develop new IndyCar safety systems. Research has already been conducted at Delphi's specialist safety systems testing facility in Vandalia, OH, using the 'THOR' advanced crash-test dummy developed by the NHTSA
'THOR' offers high-quality human biofidelity and measurement capabilities in the head, neck and thorax regions. The aim of the research has been to reconstruct specific racing accident events, better to understand the causes of motorsport injuries.
"Delphi has a long history in automotive safety innovation, and has also been a proponent of safety in racing," said William B. Hanna, Delphi's engineering director for safety systems. "With one of the most highly advanced testing facilities in the USA, and our involvement in providing several safety systems to racing, it was only natural to extend the service to the NHTSA.
"We've been able to meet the stringent requirements for testing the performance of the new crash dummy against current dummies, which is a key component to helping with the NHTSA programme."
