Winners of national model racecar competitions in 13 countries (Australia, Brunei, England, Hong Kong, Korea, Northern Ireland, Portugal, Scotland, South Africa, Thailand, the UAE, the USA and Wales) were tasked with designing model Formula 1 cars, powered by carbon dioxide and using CAD/CAM technology. Participants were judged on safety, aerodynamics, aesthetics, engineering, manufacture, race times and presentation.

Richard Hamer, Education Partnerships Director for BAE Systems, who supported the event, said: "A key objective for BAE Systems is to encourage engineering amongst young people. The standard and quality of the teams' designs is a measure of the success of the F1 Challenge in achieving this objective. They've all worked extremely hard and deserve many congratulations."

F1 in Schools is an initiative aimed at increasing the profile of engineering amongst school pupils. Mike Beasley CBE, Patron of F1 in Schools commented: "The challenge is a fantastic opportunity for young people to experience the excitement of the engineering industry, it really helps students to make an informed choice about their future."
