Swift teams up with Coyne

After losing its sole entry when Gerry Forsythe withdrew his second-string team, the Swift marque is set to return to CART at Motegi

Dale Coyne Racing will run Brazilian occasional F1 driver Tarso Marques, who started five Champ Car races last season, with a best finish of ninth.

The Swift will retain the Panasonic backing it ran in when testing for Forsythe with Bryan Herta at the wheel, but has been modified to accept a Ford engine rather than the Honda it had been tested with. The car has not yet been shaken down in this form.

Forsythe withdrew his team over a dispute with CART about the number of franchises that can be held by one team owner, as Forsythe operates both the Player's squad and the Forsythe Championship Racing outfit. However, Swift and Forsythe had also been arguing about the competitiveness of the chassis.

Forsythe and Swift over attempted to resolve the dispute when manufacturer and team tested back to back with different engineering set ups.

The test, in which Marques drove the factory-engineered car and Herta for the team, was inconclusive, with both sides claiming different outcomes. Marques' car will be supported by engineering staff from the factory.

The Motegi round of the championship, where the Brazilian made his CART debut, is to be held on May 13th.
