Surtees Wants More A1 GP Testing

John Surtees wants to hold another test day at Brands Hatch to help him decide who should drive for Great Britain in A1 Grand Prix's inaugural season - and did not rule out adding more drivers to the original shortlist

Surtees Wants More A1 GP Testing

Team A1 GBR's partner Arden International has just completed a two-day driver evaluation at the Kent circuit, with the aim of selecting which driver should represent Great Britain in the inaugural World Cup of Motorsport.

Ex-Jordan Grand Prix Ralph Firman, former British F3 Champion Robbie Kerr, McLaren Autosport Award winner Alex Lloyd and BAR Young Driver James Rossiter all tested an Arden International F3000 car on the Brands Hatch's Indy circuit.

However, Surtees said because of the changeable weather conditions during the two-day test, he would like a further evaluation day to help him and Arden decide who should be selected. He also did not rule out adding to the original shortlist if any further test was held.

Surtees told Autosport-Atlas: "All the drivers did a professional job and had the right sort of attitude and had their own styles and ways of doing things. But unfortunately we had the bad weather.

"I really would like to have a follow up test because of the conditions. What we have learnt so far will not make the drive choice easy.

"I'm not saying someone else couldn't come into the equation as well. It's not totally down to these four. It is more likely than not to be just these guys but when you've got to get a whole package together you can't make things too concrete.

"This test has been invaluable - I thought it was vital that we all came together to make certain the team and potential drivers gelled. We wanted to run four drivers who had shown extremely good promise in other activities to see how they related to the car, and were able to project to the engineers what was happening.

"But I have to leave certain things open because we are in partnership with Arden. I can't be totally fixed until we've got together and discussed all the information.

"If we don't have another test day then we will select just from these four. We wouldn't get someone else on board without putting them through the same thing."
