Surfers predicts 300,000 spectators
The 2003 Lexmark Indy 300 Champ Car headlined race meeting on the Surfers Paradise street circuit, on Australia's Gold Coast in Queensland over October 23-26, is on target to attract more than 300,000 spectators, state premier Peter Beattie asserted yesterday. "If the weather is kind to us, the event has the potential to draw over 300,000 people over the four days, which would set a new attendance record," he said. The event now contributes over A$50m to the local economy
With deputy premier and sports minister Terry Mackenroth, Mr Beattie officially launched this year's Lexmark Indy 300 by unveiling a specially commissioned sand sculpture by Australian world champion Dennis Massoud. It depicts a Champ Car and V8 Supercar cutting through the ocean.
Preparations for the event are also expected to set a new record: construction of the temporary track is scheduled to take only 96 days, down from 102 days last year and 199 days in 1996.
Mr Mackenroth said that the Lexmark Indy 300 would remain a vital component of Queensland's tourism and sport industries for at least another five years.
