Super Formula Suzuka finale cancelled, Gasly loses title shot

The final two races of the 2017 Super Formula season have been cancelled due to the threat of a typhoon that is set to hit the Suzuka track on Sunday

Super Formula Suzuka finale cancelled, Gasly loses title shot

Standings leader Hiroaki Ishiura has therefore been declared the 2017 champion and Red Bull junior Pierre Gasly misses out on a shot of taking the title.

Heavy showers had already affected the schedule of the Suzuka weekend with Friday practice delayed and qualifying called to a halt after Q1.

As conditions are expected to worsen further ahead of tomorrow's two planned races, series organiser JRP announced that both events will now be cancelled and will not be run at a later date.

The decision means that the drivers' championship standings from the previous round, which took place at Sugo last month, are now final, which hands the Inging team driver Ishiura his second Super Formula title in three years after he also took the crown in 2015.

Gasly, who had skipped the clashing Austin Formula 1 race this weekend to be present at Suzuka, misses out on the title by just half a point, while fellow rookie Felix Rosenqvist is classified third.

Inging has also claimed the 2017 teams' championship, beating Gasly's Mugen squad by four points.
