Super Formula organiser defends cancellation of season finale

The organiser of the Japanese Super Formula series has defended the decision to cancel last weekend's Suzuka season finale, revealing the event could not be postponed until a later date

Super Formula organiser defends cancellation of season finale

Heavy rain showers were expected throughout Sunday at Suzuka due to Typhoon Lan, forcing series organiser JRP to announce the cancellation of both Suzuka races on Saturday.

It meant Hiroaki Ishiura was declared the drivers' champion based on the standings after a shortened qualifying session, with Red Bull Formula 1 protege Pierre Gasly denied the title by half a point.

The organiser considered the possibility of hosting a single race on Sunday, but ultimately decided not to risk running at all following discussions with team principals.

Conditions on Sunday turned out to be far from suitable for racing, with the Mie Prefecture region of Japan - in which Suzuka is located - recording 700mm of rainfall.

Rescheduling the race to a different weekend was also deemed impractical as several Super Formula drivers have commitments in other series, including Formula 1, Super GT and the World Endurance Championship, which could have prevented them from competing.

"It was a race that the fans had high expectations for, with everyone's attention on the championship battle," JRP chief Akira Kurashita said.

"We decided to cancel the race after consultation [with the teams].

"Although we reviewed an alternative date, we decided that it would be difficult to hold during this season and we have finalised the rankings with [Saturday's] qualifying result.

"In making this decision, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their understanding and gratefulness to all our fans."
