Saturday practice: Nakano shocks
Shinji Nakano stunned the Champ Car ranks by setting fastest time in the Saturday morning practice session at Toronto's Exhibition Place. Nakano turned a lap of 58.133 seconds in his Fernandez Racing Reynard-Honda, topping Tony Kanaan by 0.3 second
Nakano's best CART finish came at Houston in 2000, when he qualified fifth and finished eighth. He matched that qualifying performance earlier this year at the aborted Texas race.
In Saturday morning's session, the top spot changed six times in the final three minutes. Kanaan stole the honour twice before Nakano slipped in his flyer after the flag had waved to end the session.
Bruno Junqueira also posted his quickest time on his last lap, notching a 58.544 in the Ganassi Lola-Toyota. Friday pacesetter Gil de Ferran was fourth, ahead of six-time Toronto winner Michael Andretti and Cristiano da Matta.
Championship leader Kenny Brack was as high as second late on in the session before he bent a corner of his Team Rahal Lola-Ford after locking up and sliding into a tyre barrier. The Swede dropped to 14th in the final reckoning.
