Sao Paulo judge lifts Brazilian GP injunction
A Sao Paulo judge has cancelled the injunction suspending the city prefecture's contract to stage the F1 Brazilian GP [Nov 11]. Last month Judge Joao Andre de Vincenzo dismissed evidence showing that the event in the Interlagos suburb generated substantial revenue for the city, having threatened to fine the prefecture £9800 daily if the contract was not cancelled within 30 days. Now Judge Sergio Coimbra Schimidt has ruled that there was no justification for the injunction
This latest development means that a lawsuit brought by prosecutors in the Sao Paulo ombudsman's office will have to be ruled on its merits - a process that could take years. "But we hope we won't have to go that far and we'll be able to reach an out-of-court agreement before the race," said Luiz Tarcisio Teixeira Ferreira, the City Hall's legal affairs secretary.
"The race has been taking place here for years and we've never had a problem," added Sao Paulo's secretary of sport, Nadia Compeao. "The organisation of the 2004 event isn't endangered."
