Rockingham cancels UK Champ Car fixture
Britain's Rockingham Motor Speedway has cancelled its 2003 CART Champ Car fixture [Nov 19], but will try to relaunch it in 2004. "We've invested with CART in bringing the world's fastest motor racing to Britain, but have decided that a 2003 event would be fiscally unviable," said Rockingham CEO Ashley Pover, who also revealed a long-term scheme to develop a motorsport technology park at the oval circuit near Corby
"We currently have less than five months to develop new marketing programmes and find sponsors," Povey continued. "Frankly, we don't have the resources to make that work. If we were to plan towards a future date, such as mid-season 2004, that would give more time to achieve the targets, which makes a lot more sense. We've enjoyed hosting CART over the past couple of years and we hope that we can reach an agreement for the future. In the meantime, Rockingham will focus on its national motor racing activities, such as ASCAR."
Rockingham also plans to diversify its activities to host concerts and other non-motorsport events, and longer-term to develop the motorsport business park and other new facilities.
