Reynard name disappears

The Reynard name looks set to finally disappear from Champ Car racing after Walker Racing announced it will ditch its Reynards in favour of a brace of Lola B2/00 chassis, the dominant car in the category, for 2005

Walker was the only team still using Reynards, and its switch effectively completes the OWRS-run series' move to a 'spec' formula, given that Cosworth engines and Bridgestone tyres are already mandatory.

The outfit has already completed the purchase of two Lola cars, and is working on finding the sponsorship to run two cars, one for Toyota Atlantic graduate Michael Valiante. The team is also looking into retaining Mario Haberfeld's services for a second season.

"In some respects we regret giving up on the Reynard," confessed Walker. "It provided a good package price-wise, but without some rule modifications we are forced to face reality and make the necessary change."

"We are all looking forward to the challenges that this change will bring," team manager Rob Edwards added. "At least now we will not be fighting with one hand tied behind our back."

Reynard Motorsport entered Champ Car racing back in 1994 with a victorious debut for Michael Andretti and Chip Ganassi Racing at Surfers Paradise. The Brackley-based manufacturer then went on to become the dominant force in the category winning seven straight drivers' and constructors' championships, and scoring 94 race victories, before falling into bankruptcy in 2002.
