Review: Mountain Legend: Targa Florio 1965 DVD
The Targa Florio was revered as one of the greatest motorsport events: a 10-lap race of a 45-mile circuit that featured almost 300 corners on public roads, twisting and turning through the jaw-droppingly picturesque Sicilian landscape

This DVD tells the story of the 1965 Targa Florio, when the event was at its peak - attracting leading manufacturers such as Ferrari, Ford, Porsche, Alfa Romeo and Alpine, with drivers from a breadth of disciplines, such as F1 stars Graham Hill and Lorenzo Bandini, and rally heroes Timo Makinen and Paddy Hopkirk, competing for overall glory.
Colour footage enhances the vibrancy of the vivid event, with coverage from the unloading of the cars, which were shipped in from Naples, through to the celebrations at the chequered flag.
Leading commentator Raymond Baxter conducts interviews with the primary protagonists on location and provides a narrative throughout, guiding the viewers through the scrutineering process, practice, and the nuances of the race.
Roadside cameras capture the action as the drivers drift their roaring sportscars through the Sicilian lanes, with an early onboard fitted to Makinen's car, providing a driver's eye view of the torturous circuit.

Atmospheric footage of passionate roadside spectators, and others going about their daily business untroubled, enhances the romanticism of the event.
The feature is complemented by a mini-documentary that joins local hero Nino Vaccarella, one of whose victories came alongside Bandini in the 1965 event (pictured above), as he returns to the Targa Florio circuit in 1983 in a Ford Sierra XR4i - recounting his memories of the iconic race.
Mountain Legend: Targa Florio 1965 is available to buy from Duke Video for £14.99. Product code 3661.
