Qualifying Cancelled at San Jose

Provisional qualifying for the inaugural Taylor Woodrow Grand Prix of San Jose has been cancelled due to what Champ Car and race officials termed 'unforeseen events'

It seems that a last-minute change of policy on the part of the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority saw the grounds being re-opened for light rail services last night, resulting in the track not being ready in time for today's scheduled programme of events.

Free practice was due to kick off at 10:15am Pacific time (17:15 GMT) but the original timetable has been thrown out of the window.

The Champ Cars finally took to the track at 1:50pm local time (20:50 GMT) to complete some reconnaissance laps and get a feel for the tight, wall-lined 1.5-mile street course.

Reigning series Champion and current points leader Sebastien Bourdais posted the fastest lap of 53.701 seconds (an average speed of 97.071 mph), shading Paul Tracy by a couple of tenths of a second. Alex Tagliani, Oriol Servia and Ryan Hunter-Reay completed the top five.

There will be an additional, 30-minute practice session beginning at 5:05 local time (00:05 GMT), which will conclude the day's on-track activity.

With Friday qualifying having been discarded, the starting grid is set to be determined by a single session tomorrow afternoon in which the drivers will be able to run an unrestricted number of laps and have use of four sets of Bridgestone tyres.
