Porsche Sign Maassen, Luhr

Porsche have announced that Sascha Maassen and Lucas Luhr will drive their RS Spider LMP2 car in the final two rounds of the American Le Mans Series this year

The outings at Petit Le Mans and Laguna Seca at the end of the year are acting as a pre-cursor to Porsche's full-scale assault on the 2006 ALMS.

The car has already been tested at Estoril in Portugal and series bosses are under no illusions about how seriously Porsche and partner Penske are taking their project.

Scott Atherton, president and CEO of the American Le Mans Series, said: "If anyone has been a student of the way Penske goes racing, you know that it is second to none.

"How they will approach the American Le Mans Series is a point of curiosity for all of us. The expectations are very high, but I don't think anyone will be disappointed."

Speaking about the experienced line-up of Maassen and Luhr, Atherton said: "They have been one of the most successful pairings in the ALMS with 14 GT2 victories together, plus a class win at Le Mans.

"Having Penske Motorsports team with Porsche in this historic venture was a huge positive in itself for the American Le Mans Series. Bringing Lucas and Sascha into the fold, along with Emmanuel Collard at Petit Le Mans, only will increase the excitement for our fans and sponsors."
