Porsche cancels Spa over tyre worries
Porsche has cancelled the Spa round of its prestigious, Formula 1-supporting Supercup race after the series' Pirelli control tyres showed 'extreme wear and deterioration' during Friday's practice sessions
The race was scheduled for Sunday, but an official statement from Porsche said: "[Porsche] made the joint decision with all teams and series partner Pirelli to cancel the second qualifying session and Sunday's race. This joint decision was made for safety reasons.
"Consideration was given to the fact that the track features very high speed cornering speeds and an extreme compression in the Eau Rouge corner. Testing here prior to the racing weekend is not possible as the Belgian circuit partly consists of public roads."
The Porsche Supercup supports the majority of the European Grands Prix, but is also appearing as a support race at the US GP at Indianapolis. The track uses almost half of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway's 2.5-mile oval and F1 teams have already expressed concerns to tyre-supplier Bridgestone over stresses through the banked turn one. Bridgestone is developing tyres for the event, but it is not known if Pirelli will bring out a modified Supercup tyre especially for the Brickyard.
