Pook confirms Brands Indy for 2003

The Champ Car World Series will definitely race on the Brands Hatch Indy circuit on May Bank Holiday, despite recent rumours that the event may be run on the extended grand prix course instead, according to CART CEO Chris Pook. Pook has left the door open for a move to the full circuit however if this year's race goes to plan

"There are a couple of things that are challenging for us at Brands," Pook admitted. "The local planning council controls the number of events that are held on the long course and there are some safety issues on the long course, including at least one place where the cars would be airborne.

"There is a great temptation because everybody wants us to run the long course, but let's just be sensible about how we approach it. Let's do our race this year on the short course and see what comes out. I don't want to pre-judge the short course until we've completed one race."

Pook also said CART's European schedule could expand to as many as four races in 2004, with Estoril and Spa-Francorchamps still in the frame for race dates.

"There is considerable interest in us going to both Estoril and Spa," he said. "But we have to have a few more discussions with our interested European manufacturers before we make final decisions on those two race tracks. I think our cars would be incredibly exciting at both venues."

CART is slated to make an announcement about an upgraded European television package next week.
