Piquet on top in final practice

Team Brazil's Nelson Piquet Jr topped the final free practice session before qualifying for this weekend's fourth round of A1 Grand Prix

Piquet put on a new set of tyres to set the time, in a dry run for this afternoon's qualifying session.

Alex Yoong was second fastest for Team Malaysia - the team's best session of the season so far. Yoong was only 0.364 seconds behind Piquet, using the knowledge he gained from racing at the track last year in V8 Supercars.

Team Great Britain's Robbie Kerr had his best session of the weekend, finishing third on a set of new tyres, only 0.410 seconds off Piquet's front running pace.

Several drivers continued to go off track as Eastern Creek, one of the trickiest circuits on A1 GP's calendar.

IRL race winner Bryan Herta had a high-speed 'off', running wide at Turn Eight and destroying his nose cone as he bounced over the grass, narrowly missing the wall at Turn Nine. The session was stopped to recover the car.

Hayanari Shimoda also stopped the session after running wide at the same corner, which caused Piquet and Portugal's Alvaro Parente to take avoiding action on the grass.

The session was stopped for minutes early after Austria's Mathias Lauda spun into a polystyrene corner bollard.
