Pioneering and Innovation: Audi R10

The diesel-powered Audi R10 has won the Pioneering and Innovation award at this year's Autosport Awards

Pioneering and Innovation: Audi R10

The car made a huge impact on its debut with a crushing victory in the Sebring 12 Hours, and took the spoils in the Le Mans 24 Hours at the first attempt.

The car then returned for the second half of the American Le Mans Series, where it was heavily handicapped by the organisers, but it remained unbeaten throughout the year.

Audi motorsport boss Dr Wolfgang Ullrich received the award from Eddie Jordan and Jean Alesi, and he was accompanied by drivers Emanuele Pirro and Allan McNish.

Ullrich said: "When we started with the project we talked with potential suppliers, and they asked us if we really wanted to do this. That convinced me.

"It was taking a big risk, but who else could have done it except Audi? Maybe we will think about a diesel engine in Formula One, but we haven't started it yet!"

Despite the performance penalties which disappointed the manufacturer's bosses, the successor to the dominant Audi R8 completed a perfect year with a victory at Laguna Seca thanks to its superior fuel-economy.
