Peterhansel gets penalty

Hiroshi Masuoka has closed on the lead of the Dakar Rally after his team-mate Stéphane Peterhansel was penalised for an infringement on the fifth stage yesterday (Monday).

Peterhansel gets penalty

Peterhansel was docked five minutes for receiving outside assistance from a team-mate. Andrea Mayer helped him push his car when he had gearbox problems 300m from the special stage finish line.

"I hope it's the first and last time we have a problem like this," said Peterhansel, who is now just over a minute in front of Masuoka overall. "We were just 80km from the overnight bivouac."

Colin McRae has also dropped time after being hit with a speeding penalty. He transgressed in a controlled area in Er Rachidia, and now lies eighth.

Giniel de Villiers and Grégoire de Mevius were others to get five-minute penalties, leaving the leaderboard with rather a different look to that published yesterday.

Peterhansel (Mitsubishi) 4h31m31s
Masuoka (Mitsubishi) +1m12s
Alphand (BMW) +10m57s
Schlesser (Schlesser-Ford) +12m59s
Biasion (Mitsubishi) +13m29s
de Mevius (BMW) +15m33s
