Palmer fastest on day two in Portugal
Jolyon Palmer ended up fastest in the final Formula 2 test of the year at Portimao today
The 18-year-old, who finished 21st in this season's standings, set two laps good enough to beat his rivals at the Algarve track, with a 1m35.519s securing the top spot.
McLaren AUTOSPORT BRDC Award winner Dean Smith had been quickest in the morning and was second overall, 0.08 seconds behind Palmer. Smith was on course to set a faster lap in the final session, but was interrupted by a red flag and later had a technical problem.
Formula 3 race-winner Renger van der Zande completed his first day of F2 running in an impressive third place, also less than a tenth of a second off the pace, and fractionally ahead of fellow F3 convert Kevin Mirocha and established F2 winner Kazim Vasiliauskas. The latter's Friday time stood as the best of the test overall, and he was also fastest in the opening session this morning. German driver Mirocha was having his second F2 outing, having shown well at Valencia last week.
Finland's Johan Jokinen had also been rapid at Valencia and remained with the frontrunners in Portugal, setting the seventh fastest time today behind fellow F2 newcomer Duncan Tappy.
Alex Brundle, Benjamin Lariche and Tristan Vautier completed the top ten, with US F1 aspirant Jonathan Summerton 14th at the end of his first day of F2.
