Optimism for Formula Ford Festival

Formula Ford's future has been assured by car maker Ford throwing its weight behind the category, a deal that was formally announced last Friday.

Despite the wait for new regulations, which are set to revamp the category, and the absence of runners from the Scottish and Benelux championships because of a date clash, the Festival is still expected to retain its importance as the rebuilding process begins.

The event will run to the same format as last season, with two heats and two semi-finals offering points which will dictate the grid for Sunday's showpiece 25-lap final.

The BRSCC's Steve Burns, who is organising the event, said: "The quality of the drivers is still there, if not the quantity, which means that it will be as difficult an event to win as it always has been."

Last year's winner, Joey Foster, who will contest the King of Kents Festival for FF1600 cars this weekend in a 1989 Reynard, believes that the formula and the Festival will retain their prominence thanks to the benefits offered to learning drivers.

Foster said: "The Festival is extremely important for any racer. And in terms of driving you learn so much more than in some of the other categories. I've found Formula Renault quite frustrating because you are more limited on set-up, so Ford remains the best place to learn more about that aspect of driving."

Although the event is run by the BRSCC, National championship promoter Sam Roach, boss of RacingLine, is also confident that the lure of the Festival remains.

Roach said: "I wouldn't say it's a holding year. There's still a lot of people talking about the Festival with great interest. Whoever does well in the Festival will get a lot of attention, which has always been the case. This year's winner will be as well known a name as the past years' winners have been."
