NZ win, as Germany take title

New Zealand ace Jonny Reid pulled off a great move on Robbie Kerr on his way to an emphatic victory in the A1GP feature race at Shanghai, as Nico Hulkenberg did more than enough to clinch the World Cup of Motorsport title for Team Germany

Reid feared that he wouldn't even take the start, after two bolts sheared off his gearbox and caused a leak on his reconnaissance laps. A quick fix gave the team plenty to worry about throughout the 38-lap race.

Despite that, Reid was able to hustle sprint race winner Kerr from the start - although he failed to pass the Team GB car from two early safety car restarts.

At the start of lap 16, Reid got a great run into Turn 1. Kerr held on around the outside of the looping corner, but eventually had to cede the place.

A third safety car period gave Kerr renewed hope that he might be able to take back the lead. But instead, he found himself defending against Hulkenberg.

Kerr brushed off the German's challenge and made it home safely in second place. Hulkenberg only needed to finish ninth to put the title out of New Zealand's reach and he settled for a podium finish.

Hulkenberg said: "Winning championships is always a great thing and means a lot. But I'm a bit sad because I would have liked to have done it with another win. I just don't like it when we are consistently too slow, as we have been this weekend."

Jonathan Summerton starred for Team USA before causing the final safety car period with a spin. His misfortune benefited the Dutch car of Renger van der Zande, who rose from ninth on the grid to fourth.

There was joy for Team Ireland after a terrible weekend. The team, joined by Manor Motorsport boss John Booth as engineer this weekend, were well off the pace with their car throughout practice and qualifying, and switched to a spare car for race day.

It paid off as Richard Lyons sliced through the field from 12th on the grid, his finishing position in the sprint, to a feature race fifth place. It was the team's best finish of a tough season.

Canada's Sean McIntosh made up for his sprint race disappointment with sixth place, ahead of Italy, France, Switzerland -who were delayed by a poor pitstop - and the Czech Republic.
