New teams for A1 Grand Prix

Pakistan and India have become the latest countries to sign-up to the A1 Grand Prix series, with Pakistan also becoming the first nation to announce its driver during a special ceremony in Lahore.

The event was attended by General Pervez Musharraf, Pakistan's president, as well as government ministers and business leaders. The day included a demonstration of the A1 GP car through the streets by series boss Sheikh Maktoum Hasher Maktoum Al Maktoum, which is believed to be the first time a contemporary racing car has run in the country.

A1 Team Pakistan Chairman Arif Husain said: "Tonight's event is truly noteworthy as it heralds Pakistan's entry into a sport that is totally new to the country. I am very honoured and proud that Pakistan's people, industry and businesses are supporting us in the pioneering and exciting world cup of motorsport."



Pakistan has confirmed that Nur B. Ali, a winner of a regional championship in the US-based Formula Mazda series, has been signed up to race for its team.

Speaking about the announcement that included confirmation of India's deal, Sheikh Maktoum said: "I am happy and delighted that A1 Team Pakistan is hosting the event where I am able to announce the participation in the series of A1 Team India. It shows how sports can bring people together in friendly competition.

"It is the first time in history that a launch of a Pakistani national sporting team has been a platform for the announcement of an Indian national sporting team - one of its oldest rivals."
