NCPI for Ferrari F1 supercomputer
Technicians from US specialist American Power Conversion are now working with the Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro F1 team to set up network-critical physical infrastructure (NCPI) equipment in its new data centre in Maranello, Italy. Ferrari has begun to deploy APC's 'InfraStruXure' system with integrated cooling for the 'supercomputer' hardware platform that performs computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations for aerodynamic modeling

'InfraStruXure' provides an architecture for power, cooling, management and services in a rack-optimised design, scalable in server capacity. This scalability is designed to take much of the guesswork, over planning, delays and risk, out of installing critical applications in high-density computing installations.
Ferrari is now implementing a large supercomputer using AMD 'Opteron' based Linux server clusters for its CFD simulations and the related storage system. With each installed rack generating 10kW of heat load, says APC, 'InfraStruXure' proved to be one of the only solutions capable of meeting Ferrari's requirements. 'InfraStruXure' also includes managing the data room construction.
Antonio Calabrese, the team's head of information systems, stated: "APC's 'InfraStruXure' system gives us flexibility for our various computing power requirements, diverse software applications and deployment challenges, while providing a highly available data centre. Today, our installed CFD calculation processes require hundreds of kW of power. The state-of-the-art 'InfraStruXure' modular solution supports us today and has the adaptability we need as we grow in the future.
"With APC managing the project setup and maintenance, it allows us to look to one experienced supplier for a turnkey solution for our data centre's physical infrastructure of power, cooling, racks, environmental management and security."
