Natl Driver: Nelson Piquet Jr
Nelson Piquet Jr has been awarded the Paul Warwick Trophy for National Racing Driver of the Year at the AUTOSPORT Awards
The Brazilian, the son of former world champion Nelson Piquet, burst onto the British racing scene this year, causing a major stir in his first season in the British Formula 3 championship. Driving for the family Piquet Sports outfit, Nelsinho took six victories on his way to third in the standings.
Piquet Jr received his award from Toyota F1 stars Olivier Panis and Cristiano da Matta. Of his debut F3 season, Piquet said: "It's a very tough championship. I think we've worked very hard this year."
Asked what advice his father had given him Piquet said: "Work hard. The whole time."
Piquet recently made his F1 test debut for Williams, and raved about the experience. "It was fantastic," he said. "Thanks to the whole Williams team for giving me the opportunity. I think it was the best experience of my life. It's amazing how fast it is."
