NASCAR set ratio regulations
NASCAR will impose pre-determined gear ratio restrictions in its Nextel Cup, Busch Series and Craftsman Truck Series categories in 2005, to limit the maximum revolutions per minute engines will be able to produce in competition. The regulation has been introduced to reduce team costs associated with engine research and development. It is also expected to enhance the competitive balance between manufacturers in each series

NASCAR will regulate the new rule by monitoring the number of teeth on the pinion and number of teeth on the ring gear during its usual inspection process. NASCAR also will equip each vehicle with a data logger, which measures rpms during all on-track activity, which will be located near the ignition system.
The regulation will be enforced at every track with the exception of the two restrictor-plate events, at Daytona International Speedway and Talladega Superspeedway, where limits are already in place.
NASCAR will also reduce the height of rear spoilers to 4.5 inches in the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series by an inch at all non-restrictor plate tracks next year.
