Mirko Bortolotti flies to Formula 2 race two pole in Austria

Mirko Bortolotti stormed to race two pole position at Spielberg, with the fastest lap of the weekend so far

The far cooler conditions clearly suited the Formula 2 cars better, and the championship leader produced a great effort of 1m20.536s to earn pole by more than 0.3 seconds.

"It was a really good session for us," said Bortolotti. "I think the lap was really good and that's the maximum for these cars on this track. Now I'm looking forward to the race."

Title rival Christopher Zanella - out of the points in yesterday's race - was facing another difficult race after spinning midway through the session. He was languishing in 19th place until he pulled a great lap out of the bag with just seconds remaining to take second.

Yesterday's race one poleman and winner Ramon Pineiro will line up third, alongside Mihai Marinescu, whose great weekend continued with a solid fourth fastest time.

Tobias Hegewald will start fifth, just ahead of the session's surprise package, Max Snegirev. The Russian was actually the fastest driver of all through the first sector on his way to a fantastic sixth fastest.

After strong showings so far, it was a disappointing session for newboy Luciano Bacheta, who starts 15th, alongside fellow debutant Rene Binder.
