McNish ponders Le Mans return

Former Le Mans winner Allan McNish has admitted that he is interested in making a return to the world famous race this year - especially because his DTM commitments with Audi do not clash with the June event

Autosport International

Autosport International is a four-day event motorsport event that includes a two-day trade show for industry professionals and a two-day public show.

Making an appearance at the Autosport International on Saturday, the former Grand Prix driver admitted that he remained attracted to competing at Le Mans - especially because his chances of victory in 2004 came to an end after only a few hours of running.

"I only did two hours last year, so I have still got 22 to finish before I start the next one," joked McNish, speaking on the Autosport Central Stage. "Looking at the current year then DTM will be the main focus, but Audi do have cars competing in Le Mans and at the moment it is being finalised roughly how many.

"I would love to do Le Mans. It is something very close to my heart and when you stand on the podium, having achieved a goal by actually finishing, let alone the success I have had, it is like a drug. That is what brings me back and brings the spectators back."

Speaking about his ambitions in the DTM, McNish drew short of making any firm predictions for his form but was optimistic that he would be fighting for race wins at the very least.

"The competition is going to be tough," he said. "Within Audi it will be tough and with Opel wanting to prove they can do the job and Mercedes wanting to get back on top it is going to be very competitive.

"The drivers taking part this year is like a motor racing 'who's who'. There are guys coming up like Gary Paffett and guys who have been up there and done it like Mika Hakkinen. I don't like making predictions but I think we will be competitive and I think we will have a very good fight. There are some good battles to come."
