Mansell Vows to be Fit

Nigel Mansell has warned his rivals that he will be fighting fit if Grand Prix Masters runs a full season in 2006, according to this week's Autosport

The 52 year-old drove the Delta Motorsport-built car for the first time at Pembrey, Wales last week and will race in the maiden event in Kyalami on November 13.

The 1992 World Champion says that should the series for ex-Grand Prix stars run a full season as planned in 2006, then he will be fit enough to compete at the front.

"I am already working on my fitness, and my plan is by next March to get within seven or eight pounds of the weight I was when I won my world titles," Mansell said.

"That should be enough and it will give me more of a chance to be on the front running pace. It's going to take time, but with everyone in equal cars I have to work on finishing an edge.

"These cars are going to surprise a few people. They are tough to drive and you really have to work at it, they remind me of late '80s and early 90s Grand Prix cars.

"With no fancy electronics or driver aids there is a lot going on - wheelspin, opposite lock, slides - and that is going to play into the hands of a guy like Alain, who is super fit and has been competing in ice racing and GTs."
