Manning secures full-time Champ Car ride

Darren Manning is excited about his debut season in Champ Car racing, having been officially announced as a driver for the Walker Racing team today (Thursday)

The British driver has been chasing a full-time drive in the American-based series since he finished ninth in a one-off appearance at last year's Rockingham 500 race. He replaces Roberto Gonzalez, whose deal with the team fell through last week. The team will run a second car, and will announce its driver on February 4.

"It's going to be great to have the opportunity to do a full season, especially with a team like Walker," said Manning. "I got a little taste of it last year and ever since then I've really wanted to get in the seat for a full season. I'm really looking forward to it."

Team boss Derrick Walker is excited by the prospect of running Manning in 2003. He said: "Darren has demonstrated his ability on many occasions during his career but we were extremely impressed with how easily he adapted to the ChampCars last season at Rockingham. We are very pleased to have him as part of our team and look forward to an exciting season in 2003."

Manning will make his first appearance for Walker at Champ Car's annual Spring Training test, which takes place at the Sebring
