Lister storms to GT pole
The Lister Storm of Julian Bailey and Jamie Campbell-Walter will start from pole position for Sunday's second round of the 2000 FIA GT Championship at the Estoril circuit in Portugal
Bailey set the fastest lap of the day in the first qualifying session, over half a second faster than his team-mate Peter Hardman in the second Lister.
"The car is really good and the circuit is getting faster and faster all the time," Bailey said.
Heavy rain hit the second qualifying session, so that no-one was able to improve their times. Vincent Vosse, at the wheel of the Paul Belmondo Racing Chrysler Viper he shares with team owner Belmondo, set the fastest time in the wet, two and a half seconds ahead of Cor Euser in the Marcos Mantara.
The Lister did not run in the rain, as the team were changing the gear-box.
However, the Marcos will start from the last row of the grid, their morning times having been disallowed after scrutineers found too much air was entering the engine.
On Sunday's grid, the all-Lister front row will be followed by a group of five Vipers, with the Gosselin/ Derichebourg Belmondo car in third place.
Le Mans 1998 winner Stephane Ortelli, sharing the Friesinger Porsche 911 GT2 with Wolfgang Kaufmann, starts from eighth.
G-Force's Michel Neugarten set the best N-GT time of the day, with a lap of 1:43.275, closely followed by Valencia class winners Bouchut, and Goueslard, in the Larbre Competition Porsche.
In the wet, British driver Robert Nearn set the third overall time, to lead the N-GT category. He shares the #50 G-Force Porsche GT3 with Marcus Wallinder.
