Leimer scores seventh IFM win of '09

Fabio Leimer scored a record seventh International Formula Master victory of the season at Imola today

The Swiss driver, who was crowned champion at Oschersleben two weeks ago, led from start to finish in yet another dominant display at the head of the field.

He romped 10 seconds clear of his nearest rival and set the fastest lap of the race on his final lap.

"It was important for me to get the seventh win, I really wanted to beat the record," he said. "I had a pretty good start and then it was like every race - I was driving at the front, doing my own race and trying to be as consistent as possible."

Sergei Afanasiev made a great start to climb from sixth to fourth, then took third place from team-mate Vladimir Arabadzhiev on the second lap when the Bulgarian ran through the gravel.

Afanasiev's rise to second was completed when Pal Varhaug dropped out of the place with broken suspension after earlier contact with Arabadzhiev.

Arabadzhiev then had to hold off Josef Kral and Alexander Rossi to maintain third place, with Patrick Reiterer following the trio home to complete the top six.
