Le Mans circuit protection society
The Association de Défense et de Protection du Circuit des 24 Heures du Mans was formed last Thursday, and is a 40-strong group which includes locally based race team owners Yves Courage and Henri Pescarolo. It was initially formed as a response to the difficulties encountered by the ACO in gaining approval for its inaugural Le Mans Classic race meeting, which were swiftly overcome [Aug 12], but the new society has now decided to remain in existence
The association vigorously countered the objections of local businesses to road closures associated with the new event this September. Chairman-elect Marc Laffeas said at its first meeting: "We understand the concerns of the companies, but they knew that there was a road racing circuit here. Wouldn't it be possible to make some changes to allow races to be organised without harming the businesses? For example, a bridge for access roads over the circuit?"
Laffeas also proposed that the Circuit de la Sarthe at Le Mans should be classified as a national historic site in order to protect its future.
