Lap 216- Course workers making a massive effort to clean up the track so the race can finish under green

Lap 215- Moreno crashes heavily in turn one as Gugelmin slips past him.

Lap 213- Gugelmin nearly slips inside Moreno in turn four as Fittipaldi pits with a puncture

Lap 211- de Ferran is 14 laps away from Penskes 100th victory as Moreno is under pressure from Gugelmin for second

Lap 205- Garcia holds up the battle for third, allowing Fernandez to get around both Montoya and Brack. de Ferran leads from Moreno, then Gugelmin, Fernandez, Brack, Montoya

Lap 201- de Ferran leads by 2.6s, Montoya (fifth) is the fastest man on the track but cannot get past Gugelmin

Lap 199- Moreno lightly brushes the wall but continues in second

Lap 195- de Ferran extends his lead to 1.6s with the top eleven covered by 7.2s

Lap 192- De Ferran leads by 0.7s, Montoya all over Gugelmin and looking for fourth

Lap 188- de Ferran just holds the lead from Moreno on the restart as Montoya goes round the outside of Andretti and Fernandez to grab fifth. Tracy is black-flagged for passing da Matta before the green

Lap 186- Reports from the medical centre say that Blundell has bruising to his back but is otherwise okay

Lap 177- Still yellow, order: 1 de Ferran, 2 Moreno, 3 Brack, 4 Gugelmin, 5 Fernandez, 6 Andretti, 7 Montoya, 8 Servia, 9 Vasser, 10 Fittipaldi, 11 Kanaan, 12 Tracy, 13 Marques, 14 da Matta, 15 Garcia Jr. Top 12 cars are on the lead lap and all have enough fuel to complete the race.

Lap 169- Blundell being assisted out of his car by the safety crew

Lap 168- Wreckage all over the race track but both drivers appear to be okay

Lap 167- Blundell and Castroneves collide and slam into the wall on the exit of turn one. Safety crew attend to Castroneves

Lap 166- Restart, de Ferran instantly opens a 1.6s lead over Moreno

Lap 163- Tracy pits for new tyres in an all-out bid to make progress through the field. De Ferran's crew are unsure about his fuel situation as the field prepares to go green flag racing once more

Lap 160- Order under yellow: 1 de Ferran, 2 Moreno, 3 Brack, 4 Gugelmin, 5 Fernandez, 6 Andretti, 7 Montoya, 8 Servia, 9 Vasser, 10 Fittipaldi, 11 Tracy, 12 Castroneves, 13 Kanaan, 14 Blundell, 15 Marques, 16 da Matta, 17 Garcia Jr. All can now make it to the end without another stop but only Kanaan and Fittipaldi can go absolutely flat-out. Tracy, Vasser and Montoya also have less fuel concerns than most of the frontrunners

Lap 157- Kanaan pits from the lead, as does Fittipaldi

Lap 155- Patrick Racing's Moreno and Fernandez (third and seventh) can definitely now complete the race without pitting for a third time

Lap 154- Kanaan was about to lap Tracy when the yellow flew. Jourdain Jr gets out of his car uninjured but the car is heavily damaged so this could be a lengthy yellow, assisting those who are trying to stretch their fuel mileage

Lap 152- Yellow as Jourdain hits the wall in turn two

Lap 151- Kanaan leads by 1.8s, with Moreno a full 7s away from de Ferran and heading a queue of all the other cars on the lead lap

Lap 143- Kanaan now 1.2s ahead. Order: 1 Kanaan, 2 de Ferran, 3 Moreno, 4 Brack, 5 Fittipaldi, 6 Gugelmin, 7 Fernandez, 8 Andretti, 9 Montoya, 10 Servia, 11 Vasser, 12 Castroneves, 13 Tracy, 14 Blundell, 15 Marques, 16 Jourdain Jr, 17 da Matta, 18 Garcia Jr

Lap 140- Montoya back to ninth as Kanaan and de Ferran pull away from the field

Lap 137- Kanaan leads from de Ferran by 0.5s with Moreno in third. Montoya back up to 11th, Tracy to 13th with Castroneves between them

Lap 134- Tracy ordered to drop to the back of the pack for regaining places under yellow after his incident with Jourdain. He pits and rejoins at the back of the queue

Lap 130- Several cars made light contact during the Tracy/Jourdain incident, including Montoya who has a broken right front wing

Lap 129- Restart, but yellow again as Jourdain spins out of turn four and hits Tracy, who had been about to lap him

Lap 125- Tagliani is black-flagged after a report of smoke from his car. He had been running eighth. Still under yellow, Andretti also pits but rejoins after a fuel top-up

Lap 117- Leaders all pit. Again Tracy comes out in front. Kanaan and Vasser stayed out, bad stop for Montoya

Lap 114- Montoya leads by 2.5s from Tracy and 5.3s by Fittipaldi. Yellow comes out as Fontana hits the turn two wall

Lap 105- Carpentier pits after slowing on course. The Player's/Forsythe crew remove the engine cover and begin working

Lap 102- Montoya stretches his lead to 2.7s as he makes a better job of the traffic than Tracy

Lap 98- Vasser reappears in seventh, there was no problem for him, merely a glitch with CART's new timing system...

Lap 95- The recovering Castroneves sets fastest lap having finally got through some traffic and up to 14th.

Lap 91- Vasser slows from seventh

Lap 87- Montoya already has a 1.4s lead

Lap 85- Montoya takes lead once more on the restart and instantly pulls away

Lap 81- The yellows came out just before Montoya completed the move, so he has to drop back behind Tracy once more as the field follows the pace car while Garcia Jr's crash is cleared up.

Lap 80- Montoya gets the jump on the restart but the yellow flies almost immediately as Garcia Jr spins into the inside wall. Castroneves is sent to the back of the queue as a punishment for running over de Ferran's air line during his pit stop. Big loser in the pits was Kanaan, he dropped to 13th. Vasser and Tagliani did well, moving up to eighth and ninth

Lap 77- Order after first stops: 1 Tracy, 2 Montoya, 3 Fittipaldi, 4 de Ferran, 5 Brack, 6 Castroneves, 7 Moreno, 8 Vasser, 9 Tagliani, 10 Fernandez, 11 Gugelmin, 12 Carpentier, 13 Servia, 14 Kanaan, 15 Andretti, 16 Blundell, 17 Marques, 18 Jourdain, 19 Fontana, 20 da Matta, 21 Garcia Jr

Lap 75- Pit stops, Tracy's crew have minor trouble with the jack but still gets out just (possibly after minor contact on pit road) with Montoya

Lap 71- Papis stops on course, bringing out a full course yellow

Lap 70- The Penskes run side by side into turn one and de Ferran makes it through into fourth place.

Lap 67- Papis passes Tagliani for 13th, but both will soon be lapped by the leaders. Montoya has now lapped Andretti and is working on Servia

Lap 64- Montoya remains stuck behind Andretti with Fittipaldi and Tracy closing on him. The two Penskes are tied together after a short gap, while Kanaan is working on Brack for sixth position

Lap 60- Top five are running almost together, then there is a ten second gap to sixth placed Brack, who heads a ten car train, at the rear of which is Andretti, currently proving a major problem for race leader Montoya as he tries to lap the Motegi winner

Lap 57- Fittipaldi now just 0.7s behind Montoya as the leader hits atrocious traffic and complains to Chip Ganassi over the radio.

Lap 50- Montoya being badly held up by Servia and Papis, allowing his lead to go down to 1.6s. Lap 45- Kanaan moves around Moreno for seventh place as Montoya laps Andretti and Servia, allowing his lead to shrink to 2.7s

Lap 38- Andretti slows briefly on course, he loses places but continues. Montoya leads by 7s as Fontana and Jourdain prove difficult for his pursuers to lap

Lap 36- Montoya now leads by 5.5s as de Ferran passes Brack for fifth

Lap 28- Montoya pulls lead up to 2.6s in traffic as Tracy begins to pressure Fittipaldi for second

Lap 24- Montoya leads by 1.8s as the field runs closely together but with little passing on the narrow oval. Already only 17 cars are on the lead lap.

Lap 16- Montoya already lapping traffic as he holds a 0.9s lead over Fittipaldi. Garcia Jr is black-flagged after some very slow laps

Lap 7- Restart, Montoya leads from 2 Fittipaldi, 3 Tracy, 4 Castroneves, 5 Brack, 6 de Ferran, 7 Moreno, 8 Kanaan, 9 Fernandez, 10 Carpentier, 11 Vasser, 12 Gugelmin, 13 Tagliani, 14 Andretti, 15 Papis, 16 Servia, 17 Blundell, 18 Jourdain Jr, 19 Fontana, 20 Garcia Jr, 21 Marques, 22 da Matta

Start- Franchitti spins into inside wall and is forced to retire. Da Matta spins and stalls in avoidance.
